Something for the Weekend: Targul Taranului

This weekend in Piata Amzei you can find the Targul Taranului Roman, a kind of farmers’ market where you will be able to buy overpriced vegetables and other such nonsense ‘direct from the producers.’

While the majority of produce on sale is no better (and a lot pricier) than what you find at your supermarket or local market, it’s worth going to check out the local specialities that you rarely find in Bucharest. Hundreds of different kinds of cheeses, sausages, pickles, jams, drob, pastries and cakes will all be on sale, and you are bound to find something you fancy. It’s just a shame that the market is not permanent: having a daily market like this might keep prices down. As it is the producers and farmers appear to want little more than to cash in while they can.

You can’t really blame them.

The market is open from 10am-5pm on Saturday, 10am-2pm Sunday.
